The latest trailer for the new HBO television series Boardwalk Empire has been released, which continues to offer glimpses into the latest gangster drama to hit the small screen. HBO, once considered risky in terms of its production of new dramas, now has the luxury of releasing new projects with the full weight of multiple Emmy awards and high ratings to provide immediate credibility. The new trailer for the Prohibition-era series created by Martin Scorsese and Sopranos writer Terence Winter features experienced wise guy actor Steve Buscemi, cast this time around as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, the powerful town treasurer and kingpin of Atlantic City. Thompson, described as “a political fixer and backroom dealer who is equal parts politician and gangster and equally comfortable in either role”, is brought to penetrating life through Buscemi, who is no stranger to eccentric performances of layered depth. HBO has desperately been seeking their next big hit since the Soprano’s, and Tony’s fate, faded to black. To make matters worse, a basic cable channel, has thrown down the gauntlet by producing two smash hits with Breaking Bad and Mad Men. Finally, HBO has settled on a project. They’re putting all their marbles down on Boardwalk Empire, betting it will overcome AMC by combining elements of Mad Men and The Sopranos. Boardwalk Empire is a gangster story set in a period genre. Trailers have been running for Boardwalk Empire since January, and it is difficult to say that it looks anything less than spectacular. The cinematography appears to be HBO’s best yet. To knock it up a notch, HBO has brought on Martin Scorsese to direct the pilot. In addition, HBO says Scorsese will have a “major creative role” in many other episodes in the first season. As if a Martin Scorsese-directed work needed any more help, Boardwalk
Empire looks to be getting it. The upcoming HBO series is picking up
momentum as it stands right now, with Entertainment Weekly giving it a
major stamp of approval. That magazine is the gold standard for new
television shows, and upon reviewing Boardwalk Empire, Entertainment
Weekly gave it the highest grade. The “A” is something that figures to
power this series forward to its much anticipated premiere, which will be

Is it possible to hate Steve Buscemi? I hold the opinion that it’s not, as he is one of the finest actors of the last two decades. Though he doesn’t get nearly the amount of acclaim he deserves, Steve Buscemi is one of the most skilled professionals in the business. He can (and has) play almost every single role out there, from a homeless, pizza loving resident of the city jail to a trendy “man’s man”. He has had quite a few memorable performances, so it is hard to put them in a rankings list. I tend to like them all for different reasons, but I will do my best to arrange a top-5 here. Adapted from a Nelson Johnson book of the same name, the series figures to be another high quality work from HBO, as the network puts its reputation on the line again. There are many reasons to get excited about the Boardwalk Empire, not the least of which is the reported involvement of Academy Award winner Martin Scorsese. Overall, HBO has put together quite a list of impressive contributors, including a world class screenwriting team to go along with the quality direction.
